Did you know that more than half the black men in Salvador Brazil are gay? It is said that 80% of the black men in Salvador Bahia in Brazil are either gay or as they call it “hetero-flexible”? This term is not considered gay, bi-sexual or being on the “down low” like here in America.
According to the history of Salvador, Brazil, the Portuguese are the culprits for this unusual distribution of sexual orientation and it traces all the way back to slavery. During early colonization, the Portuguese brought almost exclusively African men to this part of Brazil without any female companions. The African women were brought in much later so the men got pretty freaky with each other due to circumstance.
This reminds me of what prison culture is today in that men adjust to their environment and the term, “Gay for the stay” is very real. However, in Bahia, men are very free about their sexuality. They can be with a woman and a man and think nothing of it because sexuality is not necessarily defined as it is in the states.
According to a local Queen of Calcada, these “hetero-flexible” men are the aggressors when it comes to sex and the Queens are the submitters. The Queens are gay men who sometimes take on the persona of a woman, much like drag queens in the states. The Queen can have a harem of men in any amount depending on how many he can service. The Queens are graded according to their financial status in the community based on the work they do. For example, a Queen that is a tour guide will have a lot of men in her harem because he is considered a great catch because of the money he makes. In addition to this, these Queens reward the men for their sexual services by paying a phone bill or giving them monetary gifts in return for protection and aggressive sex. The straight men are ranked in line to break the Queen off according to their overall performance in bed, their penis size and attitude. Therefore you know that if you are seeing the Queen later in the day, your skills aren’t that tight.
Queens are very territorial. Each Queen has her own territory or hood and guards it with a very watchful eye to make sure no other Queen enters without his permission. This is in fear of them gaining access to and taking their men. Without permission, fights can happen and it can get ugly. However, once permission is given to another Queen to enter an even exchange is made. The Queen of the hood might give the visitor permission to have a couple of his men in the harem for exchange of a few of his. The one with a late time will probably be the first to be offered up because they are certainly not going to let number one go. With this agreement they can now visit each other. I didn’t believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. This is the Crypts and Bloods on “E”. Instead of guns they are slinging dicks.
These hetero-flexible men cannot service another Queen in the neighborhood unless a referral from their Queen is given. This usually happens when their Queen leaves town, gets sick or is unavailable to service them. Without a referral they can be ousted out of the whole community by being suspected of sneaking around. Once word gets out about the man’s behavior it is a rap for him in Bahia’s Queendom. They are like the Mafia. Queens from the hood meet up once a month for council meetings. In these meetings they discuss the discipline of the men who have secretly been visiting other Queens in the area and their roles in the neighborhood. If a “hetero-flexible” man from another part of the country wants to come and visit another territory a referral must be given by their local Queen to the Queen in the area he wants to travel to. The Queen will then discuss the man’s performance and recommend him accordingly. He may then come up and stay with the Queen for a trial period or as agreed upon. He might clean the house, get a job, and whatever else, but his main job and purpose down there is to fuck the shit out of the Queen.
Most Queens only deal with straight men. It is uncommon to see two “gay” men together. If two gay men are seen together in a relationship they are often referred to as “lesbians” even though the straight men that sexually serve them are obviously bi-sexual or “hetero-flexible” as they like to call it.
So, what do the women do you may ask? The women in Salvador are not out of the loop. They know about the lifestyle of the men here and have no choice but to roll with it or not. When I was in Bahia, it made me want to grow a dick and prance around as a woman because the “trannies” got more attention than me. However, for some gay men in the states who might be reading this and thinking to themselves, “I want to go there,” acceptance into a territory is not that easy. Usually the gay men who have relocated to Bahia are outcast and keep to themselves. You have to be invited in because they don’t take to outsiders coming to take their men and get in on the action.
