Ira Sherman is an American Sculptor who uses materials shapes and inspiration from science and technology to produce artistic pieces that interact with the audience or viewer in a biological way. Many of Sherman’s pieces are “prosthesis” created around a social concept or construct. The art is meant to inspire thought about ourselves and the world we live in. The art below is from his “Impenetrable Devices” exhibition and has been displayed widely across the United States.

Cremasteric Reflex Corset

This device has been designed to include a generous dose of deterrence and personal protection. High pressure pneumatic cylinders perform basic cutlery functions when activated by a strategically located pressure sensitive air valve.

Male Anti Rape Device

This comfortable yet effective stainless steel device protects delicate anatomy while restraining the man from attacking.

Saber Tooth Speculum

A miniature sterling silver casting of the skull of a saber tooth tiger is firmly mounted on the inside surface of a stainless steel medical speculum. Penetration into this speculum will result in great anguish to the rapist.

Intimate Electric Fence

A powerful 500 volt electrical shock is delivered to anyone foolish enough to come into contact with the two carefully insulated electrodes. The electrodes run the full length of this device giving protection from different angles of attack.

Bear Trap Corset

A highly identifiable spring loaded miniature bear trap is carefully positioned between the legs to ward off possible attackers. The primitive mechanical trap components and laced hip-fitting corset design make this device appealing to those more Victorian minded individuals.

The Injector

I interviewed 5 rape victims. I would ask, “what messages would you like me to convey in the sculptures I plan to create? Each victim gave me a list of ideas they would like to express. Two viewpoints were common with all rape victims, female or male. The desire to identify and capture the rapist was universal. “THE INJECTOR” device uses pneumatically powered hypodermic syringes to simultaneously inject tattoo dye and a powerful sedative into the attacker. The rapist drops in his tracks and is permanently identified making for easy apprehension.
