Presumably, rape has existed as long as sexual intercourse has existed.   Men are generally physically stronger than women, and have the power to dominate them sexually if motivated to do so.  For men, fear of rape is not something they can easily relate to (unless they have been to prison). Women, however,  are usually intimately aware of their sexual vulnerability.  In some places such as South Africa, rape has become such a problem that 1.2 women per thousand are raped each year.  Compare this to .3 women per thousand raped per year in the United States (which ranks 10th in the world).  These alarming numbers have led some women to seek protection against rape.

Demand for rape protection has resulted in the invention of many anti-rape devices. What follows are some examples of these anti-rape devices.

One interesting thing to note is that these devices generally serve two purposes.  The first is to stop the attacker.  The second, is to inflict so much pain and/or mutilation that fear is incited into all men who might attempt rape.

1.  Female Protective Device (1977)

Abstract: Female protective device to prevent rape, the device including an elongated slender shaft having a sharp end, a first annular enlargement fixed around the shaft adjacent to but spaced from the sharp end, and a second enlargement connected by a flexible joint to the other end of the shaft. The device is meant to be worn inside the vagina with the sharp end pointed outward. -Source

2.  Harpoon Based Anti-Rape Device (1979)

Abstract: This anti-rape device is comprised of a tube that is inserted into the vagina.  The tube contains a rod with a harpoon tip designed for puncturing and ensnaring the penis of a potential rapist.  The housing of the device is meant to protect the vagina from blood or body fluids lost by the attacker.  The harpoon tip was designed to be difficult and extremely painful to remove.  The creator also envisioned a similar device with several harpoons instead of a single harpoon. -Source

3.  Needle Based Anti-Rape Device w/Narcotic(1979)

Abstract: This anti-rape device consists of a hollow housing made to fit inside the vagina.  The housing has an opening at one end.  Inside, it contains a hypodermic syringe that contains a “rape-deterring” fluid. The hypodermic syringe is aligned so it is facing the opening of the housing.  The needle is placed on an actuator that propels (via a spring) the needle into the penis of the would-be rapist. The actuator is only sprung by insertion of an erect penis into the housing of the device.  The fluid injected into the penis can vary, but the patent holder recommends a fast acting safe narcotic such as scopolamine that will quickly render the rapist unconscious. -Source

4. Anti-Rape Device w/Acid (1985)

Abstract: This anti-rape devices is to be worn inside the vagina. It is comprised of a hollow housing with an interior coating of an adhesive. Positioned  within the housing is an irritant contiaining pouch meant to rupture when penetrated by an erect penish.   The penis is then become entrapped by the interrior adhesive, that can not be easily removed. The irritant will continue to cause suffering untill the device can be removed. The patent holder states that many different irritants can be used depending on the severity of damage one wishes to inflict.  Formic Acid and Hydrocloric Acid are two irritants mentioned as possibilities. -Source

5. Anti-Rape Penis Trap (1994)

Abstract: This device is made of a flexible metal rim that contains pointed spears (teeth) at its entrance that point inward. These teeth move only inward and act as a trap for an inserted penis.  The housing of the rest of the device is made from flexible rubber, similar in feel to a condom.  The trap can not be easily removed. -Source

6.  The T-1000 of Anti-Rape Devices (1998)

Abstract: Essentially, this device is a complete anti-rape solution. It’s  a computerized cylindrical vaginal insert meant to minimize damage from sexual intercourse, to obtain a tissue sample of the rapist, and to deter/damage the penis of the rapist.  Here’s a list of features. If you want more details, check here.

  1. Device fits inside vagina and protects it from damage.
  2. Device will catch any fluids released inside, and contain them from contact with the wearer.
  3. Device contains computerized pressure sensors that can tell when an object has been inserted.
  4. Device dispenses an “identification dye” onto the inserted object when sensors are activated.
  5. Device is equipped with a recording device that is activated by microcomputer when sensors are activated.
  6. Device dispenses surgical glue onto inserted object, causing the device to be attached to the penis of a potential attacker.
  7. A needle is positioned and activated inside the device so that upon penetration, the needle simultaneously takes a tissue sample, and injects an irritant into the inserted object.

7.  Rape-aXe (2005)

Abstract: The Rape-aXe system consists of a latex sheath, which contains razor-sharp barbs. The device is worn in thevagina like a tampon. When the attacker attempts vaginal penetration the barbs attach themselves to the penis, causing great discomfort. The device must be surgically removed, which will result in the positive identification of the attacker and subsequent arrest. -Source

brr this is creepy. Just imagine having sex with a woman and she forgot to take her anti-rape war machine out..

  2. Guy says:

yeah, just what I want. A rapists blood all up in me.

  3. Blargety says:

I’d be more worried about the rape turning into a murder.

  4. Anms says:

Well, foreplay will solve that problem. Ask questions. “Say girl, will your vagina shoot harpoons at my junk?”

  5. venkat says:

This looks very void. These kinds of toys must not be encouraged among the kids.

  6. fffjff says:

these look like a great way to turn a rape into a homicide.

  7. Autochron says:

“For men, fear of rape is not something they can easily relate to (unless they have been to prison).”

I hate to nitpick, and I do like the post, but I’m not buying that comment at all. There are a lot of male homophobes out there, and fear of rape factors into that. Not to mention males that have been sexually abused as children (still not as common as females but certainly not unheard of).

Just something I needed to get off my chest. Carry on, and let’s see if we can’t get a device like this that actually works :D At the moment I’m thinking a miniature spring-loaded curare dart gun, with a neoprene seal and a auto-releasing antidote for the wearer. Not sure how realistic that is, though.

  8. void says:

the woman get raped and also get slapped with murder

  9. Debnet says:

So how does the female remove it without losing a finger or two?

  10. Non says:

I’d be afraid to get blood inside me… Chances are they have AIDS from one of their previous victims.

  11. Best invention yet says:

This should be a number one seller for women. Just make sure that any blood would be contained in the tube. I think it would deter a lot of men. Think about it, if you were a man, and knew that women were walkin around with these things in them, would you try something? I don’t think so. I did see another type that actually cut off a piece of the penis. Serves them right I say.

  12. Nondachshund says:

Its easy to bypass anti-rape devices. Just use a dildo or object to penetrate the woman before raping her so the penis don’t punctured.

What would stop a person from using this in a malicious way. Say, an emotionally unstable relationship has a conflict. during supposed reconciliation, the female party (still angry) uses one of said devices during “Make-Up” intercourse… what then? the male party is now branded (and disfigured) because of a spiteful lover?

I would like to say that rape is one of, if the highest example of, horrible situations that people have to deal with; But, where do we draw the line? This technology could easily become a weapon for someone with a malicious agenda.

Also, At what point is a female supposed to apply this item of self defense? directly before or during putting themselves into a potential rape scenario? Do you always wear this item? Do you keep it on your person in case you start to feel things aren’t quite right?

In the case that you wear this out whenever you go bar-hopping, what stops you from forgetting that the apparatus is still being worn (in the event that you actually want to have consensual intercourse with another person) and still have the sense to remove it prior to a drunken mistake?

    Thank you for your consideration.

I think coupling the Rape-Axe with the narcotics would be the best idea. If people are concerned that a homicide might be provoked then rendering the rapist unconscious would surely help prevent that and allow the women to get away and reach the police. As well the device would have to be surgically removed so the perpetrator could be identified. As for autochron’s comment: I highly doubt homophobes truly fear being raped. They fear having men hit on them maybe, but I don’t think they walk to their cars at night clutching pepper spray, their cell phone, and keys in hand to protect themselves from an attacker, a daily experience for woman everywhere. Women disproportionately experience rape (not counting prison) and I don’t think it’s even a close comparison to talk about gay-haters fearing gay advances. Child rape/molestation is clearly a problem but this device in not meant to deal with that problem.

If men are concerned that they will inadvertently be damaged by any such device how about taking a stand against other men who continue to attack and rape women so that these devices aren’t needed.

alot of rapes turn to homicide in the first place so that the rapist can’t be identified. you really want to enrage someone that has allready asserted complete control over your actions go ahead. these products are USELESS. buy a F-ing gun or even a taser will actually work. these devices will not

  16. Anonymous says:

The essential problem with all these devices is a blaming of the victim/potential victim. How about taking steps to address the reasons men rape and some preventative measures there?

  17. Anonymous says:

No, she can’t get in trouble for harming the rapist. She can do what she wants with her body. It’s the same as if she were unconscious. After she wakes up do you arrest her because she didn’t make her body accomodating to the rapist?

Considering what these devices do, the situation won’t turn into a murder. The rapist would move as slowly and carefully as he ever has in his entire life. ANY ensuing scuffle of ANY sort would involve the sounds of a penis being ripped and torn.
